[Elecraft] [KX3] Has anyone used their KX3 with one of the SCS Pactor controllers?

If you have, what kind of success did you have working with it at 10 watts?

What kind (if any) of audio circuit did you use to interface the audio
to/from the rig.straight cables or something with some kind of
filtering/matching?

Thanks,

Carlton

Hi Carlton,

The KX3 has been confirmed to work with the SCS Pactor modems. Contact
Farallon Electronics as I understand they are planning to offer a pre-built
cable for the the SCS modems for the KX3. This is the US distributor for
SCS modems in the US.

Cheers,

David

Carlton,
I have an SCS PTC II which I have used for WinLink using another rig other than my KX3. I run about 15 Watts when I do that. I have been quite successful connecting to WinLink stations using both pactor I and II.

I also have a SignaLink USB. I went ahead and ordered the cable to go with my KX3. In this mode, I run winmor for Winlink connection. However, I only run 3-4 Watts. I live in Annapolis, Md, and I usually connect with a station in Florida or Canada. The trick is to pick the correct frequency for the time of day. The other thing is to know whether it is better to connect to a station nearby or 1200 miles away. As I have only one station nearby, ~120 miles, I usually use the Florida station, ~ 1000 miles, on 20m meters in the afternoon. The most important thing is to know/learn what your equipment will do and develope a little practice.

Barry,

Thanks for the reply. How would you compare the throughput of Pactor vs Winmor. I know on paper Pactor iii is quite a bit faster, but since you have experience

with both of them, I was wondering what you observations in real life were in terms of ability to work in bad conditions and actual throughput. What were your

reasons for buying the Pactor modem? Do you think the cost is worth it compared to what you can get for free (Winmor)?

Thanks,

Carlton
