I finally got my KX3 working as a panadapter
together with my TS-590 last night.
Here is how I did it; I have tried to describe
this in a generic way so everyone can do this no matter what? main transceiver they
have as long as the transceiver is supported by HRD.
To do this yourself, you need to first download
and install HRD.
http://www.hrdsoftwarellc.com/
Then, download and install HDSDR.
http://www.hdsdr.de/
Then, download and install Omnirig
http://www.dxatlas.com/omnirig/.
Then you need to download and install a serial
port splitter, many are available depending on what you want.
http://serial-port-splitter.winsite.com/
http://www.eltima.com/products/serialsplitter/
http://www.serial-port-splitter.com/
?
(If you have a TS-590, or have a MicroHAM MicroKEYER 1 or MicroKEYER II, you don't need to use the serial splitter because the TS-590 have 2 serial ports is you use both the RS-232 port and the USB port, and the software on the MicroKEYER's allows for a second CAT port.) Other ways to do this also exists.
?
Configure one instance of HRD with your main
transceiver. (Let?s call this HRD1.)
?
Configure another instance of HRD with your KX3. Choose
Elecraft K3 in the setup. (Let?s call this HRD2.)
Run both instances of HRD. (HRD1 and HRD2).
Set up HRD (any instance) for synchroniasation.
(See page 145 in the HRD manual.)
Choose HRD1 as master, and HRD2 as slave.
Setup up your serial port splitter in such a way
that the KX3 COM port is shared between HRD2 and HDSDR.This will give you
another virtual COM port.
Configure HDSDR and Omnirig for the KX3 virtual
COM port. (Use Elecraft K3 in Omnirig.)
Connect the I/Q output of the KX3 to your
soundcard, and press start in HDSDR, you should now be able to see a waterfall
running.
When tuning you main transceiver you should now be
able to change frequency on the KX3, the LO oscillator frequency in the HDSDR
should follow the frequency displayed on the KX, which again should follow the
main transceiver. When tuning the main transceiver, you will notice a little lag before the KX3 is tuned to the same frequency, this is normal.
To get full advantage of this system you need a
splitter for the antenna, and a RF relay so you don't send 100 watt into your
brand new KX3!!!
You may make this yourself, or you can buy this
one: http://www.herostechnology.co.uk/pages/RF_Filters/filters.html#SPLTBYP
IMPORTANT: BE CAREFULL NOT TO TRANSMITT INTO THE
SPLITTER AND/OR THE OTHER TRANSCEIVER WITH YOUR MAIN TRANSCEIVER OR THE
KX3!!!!!

I just uploaded a video demo that shows how the KX3 works as a panadpter for the TS-590.
I should work quite well for just about any rig supported by HRD.
The video:

(And before you guys start to complain, I know i ain't going to get any Oscar this year, hi, hi!!)
